The Voyage of the `Frolic': New England Merchants and the Opium Trade
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (September, 1997)
Average review score:

Exciting History of a fast moving opium runnerA model of the Frolic is on display at the Cabrillo Lighthouse, Mendocino, CA. Before you visit the area, read this book. The book covers the entire history of the Frolic, those who built it, the course it took for its short 6 year life -- before sinking off Pt. Cabrillo. Its history includes its involvement with the Opium War, American incursions in China and exciting trade run with opium, Chinese ceramics and silks. A must read if you're interested in international history and the ships that created commerce and connection with the rest of the world.
In a class all its ownOddly enough, our book group chose Voyage of the Frolic and what great fun and an education it has been. I've always dreamed of going on an archeological expedition and here, without the dirt, pan, screens and brushes, I've discovered another layer of the past. What an eclectic history California has.
Wonderfully executedThe Voyage of the Frolic is a readers dream. Bostonian History, Maritime life, Chinese trade, the Coast of California and our indigenous Indians all rolled into one well written and enjoyable read. Thank you Professor Layton for unraveling the past and placing it in a wonderful china bowl for all of us to peruse and get to know.

Cafe Beaujolais
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (May, 1985)

yummmmmyThe recipes in this book are great, especially the tomato soup and chicken salad (Chinese). I really liked the simple way in which they were written and the use of readily available ingredients. My favorite part of the book was all the minutae about the restaurant itself. From starting a restaurant, to running it, to buying provisions, to personnel, the book was a fascinating inside look at the business of food. The authors never complained, but they made me realize what a tough business they are in. Hope I can visit Cafe Beaujolais sometime.
My favorite cookbook on the shelf!I spent a lovely weekend on the coast and happened upon CAFE BEAUJOLAIS. After a splended meal, I purchased an autographed copy of this book. The recipes are all easy to follow and each have a history or source. Her spicy buttermilk coffee cake is to die for! Ms. Fox speaks of her cookbook collection and how she "looks up" the same recipe in many different cookbooks. This is where I first understood the concept of recipe comparing. I also enjoyed reading about the goings-on in her resturant. This is a fabulous book!
I've worn out my first copy of cafe beaujolaisThis is my one book that i go to again, and again and again. Everything in it from Chinese Chicken Salad to Mom's Banana Cake is scrumptious. It's hard to say what is my favorite - I guess they all are. You are missing out if you don't have this book. You won't be sorry; not to mention that simple instructions, simple ingredients, wonderful for the novice cook and then some. ENJOY!

Morning Food from Cafe Beaujolais
Published in Hardcover by Ten Speed Press (May, 1990)
Average review score:

Morning FoodI have read many cookbooks that are bone dry and boring, like a chemistry textbook. This isn't the case with "Morning Food". Fox presents her recipes and anecdotes with warmth and humor. No matter the time of day this book puts you in the mood for breakfast. The coffee cakes are heavenly!
Recipes in this book help you recall Mendocino momentsWritten with wit and wisdom, MORNING FOOD helps cooks of all skill levels recreate some of the wonderful tastes of Margaret Fox's charming Mendocino restaurant, Cafe Beaujolais. The restaurant is one of the many wonderful reasons people from all over Northern California--and the world--brave slow and twisty roads that hug the cliffs and hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco.
The food detailed in Margaret Fox's book is both simple and complex. Freshness is the keynote here, but creating with what you have available is important, too.
If you enjoy reading cookbooks for pleasure or simply want a "how-to" list of recipes, you will be pleased with MORNING FOOD.
Breakfast and brunch lovers, look no further!Having been a huge fan of the author for years, I couldn't wait to jump into this book. The recipes are consistently delicious and impressive. Her cinnamon rolls and bread are simply unparalleled! If you love to entertain in the morning or simply want incredibly tasty breakfast/brunch recipes you must read this book. I must also say that her writing style is so enjoyable...readable, witty and unpretentious. The book is full of little anecdotes about life in Mendocino and running a restaurant. Check it Out!!

Compost College: Life on a Counter-Culture Commune
Published in Paperback by Devil Mountain Books (May, 1997)
Average review score:

Some deft prose from the countercultureThis is a well-written chronicle of the starts, stops, misfires and joy of a radical experiment in education. I enjoyed the contrast between the introduction, written at the time of publication, and the book itself, taken from journals written nearly thirty years ago. While the hair may have grayed, the zeal has not flagged. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
Terrific insight into the commune lifestyleThe book starts a little slow in the middle of the story and works its way to the begining and end. Stay with it and you will be rewarded with a clear understanding of what a life in the commune was really like.

Beautifully writtenThank God for academics like Dr. Layton. I took his Anthro Class many years ago and soon loved Thursdays. His class was the highlight of my day. He writes as wonderfully as he lectures. It is always a gift when a professor makes a difference in your life. BRAVO!

Hidden Wine Country: Including Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino (Hidden Wine Country)

A highly recommended "take-along" guideFrom historic wineries in California's Sonoma and Napa Counties to back roads, lodging in small retreats, and dining in recommended establishments, Hidden Wine Country seeks to uncover less-traveled roads in the Wine Country - and does it successfully. Hidden Wine Country is quite an achievement for an area over-saturated with publicity: the authors specialize in finding the unusual, quality experience. GreatBookMy day did all the photography in this book. I'm even in it as a child. Read this book to bring your self back to the "post-hippie" era and hear the tales of those folks who continued their quest to live outside the realm of conformity on the Northern California Mendocino Coast and their relationship with their unique modes of transportation.
